Announcing Round 24 of the Bloomberg Initiative To Reduce Tobacco Use Grants Program

Project Ideas are now being accepted for Round Twenty-Four of the Grants Program.

The deadline for submission of Project Ideas is 12:00 hours, US Eastern Standard Time (GMT -5 hours) on Monday, 25 June 2018.

In December 2006, the Global Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use was launched through a competitively awarded grants program in low- and middle-income countries. The Global Initiative is funded by Michael R. Bloomberg and the grants program managed by the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.

As part of the Strategic Grant round, applicants within the following ten priority countries may apply:

  • China
  • India
  • Indonesia
  • Bangladesh
  • Pakistan
  • Vietnam
  • Philippines
  • Brazil
  • Ukraine
  • Mexico

 

Priority will be given to projects that lead to sustainable improvements in tobacco control laws, regulations, and policies at the national or sub-national level (e.g. provinces, states, cities), including (but not restricted to):

Policy Focus

 

China

  1. Support FCTC-compliant national smoke-free policy
  2. Support effective tax and price measures for tobacco products
  3. Support FCTC-compliant pictorial warning labels

India

 

  1. Support effective tax and price measures for tobacco products with an emphasis on bidis
  2. Support effective, comprehensive, FCTC-compliant implementation of TAPS and smoke-free at the city and/or state level
  3. Counter industry interference and/or support passage and implementation of Article 5.3.*

*Note, this must be combined with reference to support for tax and/or TAPS policies listed above.

Indonesia

  1. Increase tax and price of tobacco products
  2. Support passage and effective implementation of smoke-free laws
  3. Support passage and effective implementation of comprehensive TAPS laws

Bangladesh

  1. Increase tax and price of tobacco products
  2. Support effective, comprehensive, FCTC-compliant implementation of TAPS and smoke-free at the city and/or divisional level
  3. Counter industry interference and/or support passage and implementation of Article 5.3.*

       *Note, this must be combined with reference to support for tax and/or TAPS policies listed above.

Pakistan

  1. Increase tax and price of tobacco products
  2. Support implementation of 85% GHW
  3. Establish sustainable funding for tobacco control
  4. Support effective, comprehensive, FCTC-compliant implementation of TAPS and smoke-free at the city and/or province level

Vietnam

  1. Increase tax and price of tobacco products
  2. Support implementation of smoke-free law
  3. Counter industry interference and/or support passage and implementation of Article 5.3.*

       *Note, this must be combined with reference to support for tax and/or smoke-free policies listed above.

Philippines

  1. Support and protect increases in sin tax and price of tobacco products
  2. Support implementation of smoke-free law
  3. Counter industry interference and/or support passage and implementation of Article 5.*

Brazil

  1. Increase tax and price of tobacco products (agreed)
  2. Support passage and effective implementation of more comprehensive TAPS laws
  3. Support strengthening of packaging and labeling laws.

Mexico

  1. Support passage and effective implementation of national smoke-free law
  2. Increase tax and price of tobacco products
  3. Support passage and effective implementation of comprehensive TAPS laws.

Ukraine

 

  1. Increase tax and price of tobacco products
  2. Strengthen smoke-free law and effective implementation
  3. Counter industry interference and/or support passage and implementation of Article 5.3. Note this must be combined with reference to support for tax and/or smoke-free policies listed above.

 

Applicants from other countries are not eligible for this round but may apply under the next open Grant Round.
