Announcing Round 30 of the Bloomberg Initiative To Reduce Tobacco Use Grants Program

Project Ideas are now being accepted for Round Thirty of the Grants Program.

The deadline for submission of Project Ideas is 12:00 hours, US Eastern Standard Time (GMT -5 hours) on 2 August 2021.

Since December 2006, the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use Grants Program is an important component of the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use, jointly managed and run by The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK). The competitive Grants Program supports projects to develop and deliver high-impact, evidence-based tobacco control interventions aligned with the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations, the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and the guidelines for its implementation.

As part of the Strategic Grant round, applicants within the following ten priority countries may apply:

  • China
  • India
  • Indonesia
  • Bangladesh
  • Pakistan
  • Vietnam
  • Philippines
  • Brazil
  • Ukraine
  • Mexico

Priority will be given to projects that lead to sustainable improvements in tobacco control laws, regulations, and policies at the national or sub-national level (e.g. provinces, states, cities.). Project proposals should focus on tobacco control policy priorities including (but not restricted to):

  • Tax and price measures.
  • Direct and indirect advertising bans (including promotion and sponsorship)
  • Establishment of smoke-free policies for public places and workplaces
  • Policies for graphic warning labels on tobacco products
  • FCTC Article 5.3 policy (this must be in association with strengthening MPOWER policies)

China

  1. Support national and subnational FCTC-compliant smoke-free policies.
  2. Support effective tax and price measures for tobacco products.

India

  1. Support effective tax and price measures for tobacco products with an emphasis on bidis.
  2. Support FCTC-compliant COTPA amendment at the national and the subnational level.
  3. Advocate for effective, comprehensive, FCTC-compliant implementation of TAPS and/or smoke-free policies.

Indonesia

  1. Increase tax and price of tobacco products.
  2. Support passage and advocate for effective implementation of smoke-free and/or TAPS laws.
  3. Support passage of larger FCTC-compliant pictorial health warnings.

Bangladesh

  1. Increase tax and price of tobacco products.
  2. Support FCTC-compliant tobacco control law at the national level.
  3. Support FCTC-compliant pictorial health warnings.

Pakistan

  1. Increase tax and price of tobacco products.
  2. Support and advocate for implementation of increased size of pictorial health warnings.
  3. Establish sustainable funding for tobacco control and national and provincial level.
  4. Support effective implementation of FCTC-compliant TAPS and/or smoke-free policies.

Vietnam

  1. Increase tax and price of tobacco products.
  2. Advocate for implementation of smoke-free and TAPS law.

Philippines

  1. Support passage and implementation of tobacco tax increases on traditional and novel tobacco products.
  2. Advocate for comprehensive SF Law, eliminating DSAs and support stronger implementation of local and national smoke-free law.
  3. Defend and preserve the gains made on regulation of new tobacco products and the authority of the FDA over these products.

Brazil

  1. Increase tax and price of tobacco products.
  2. Support passage and effective implementation of more comprehensive TAPS policies.
  3. Support strengthening of packaging and labeling laws and/or regulations.

Mexico

  1. Support passage and advocate for effective implementation of national smoke-free law.
  2. Increase tax and price of tobacco products.
  3. Support passage and advocate for effective implementation of comprehensive TAPS laws.

Ukraine

 

  1. Strengthen smoke-free law and advocate for effective implementation.
  2. Support passage and advocate for effective implementation of comprehensive Point of Sale ban.
  3. Increase tax and price of tobacco products.
