Supporting and Monitoring FCTC and MPOWER Strategies in Turkey

The aim of this project is bridge the gap between legislation and implementation by ensuring the adoption and proper implementation of tobacco control policies that fully comply with FCTC and MPOWER strategies and that are firmly based on the tenets of health protection. The approaches include watchdog and advocacy, public and media relations, and training/awareness activities. Specifically the project will focus on TAPS ban, Smoke Free legislation. It will apply these approaches specifically to TAPS ban, Smoke Free, Article 5.3 and to assuring that publicly administered programs and processes are compliant with FCTC and MPOWER.

Legal Support for Strengthening and Protecting FCTC Policies and Guidelines in Turkey

Health Institute

The aim of this project is to protect existing tobacco control legislation and strengthen regulations and implementation of FCTC policies and guidelines. The project will provide legal support to the tobacco control community of the country in both the public and NGO sectors. Specifically the project will provide legal assistance and counsel to tobacco control advocacy efforts, inform and provide legal guidance to public authorities and will confront tobacco industry interference.

Sustaining and augmenting tobacco control policies at a time of political climate change

The Health Institute of Turkey

The purpose of this project is to sustain tobacco control policies already in force and address gaps in regulation, monitoring and enforcement during a time of change in the political climate in Turkey. It will achieve this by working with new MPs and policymakers to generate and enhance a positive opinion about tobacco control policies, providing technical assistance to adopt more effective laws, and counteracting TI interference.

The project aims to monitor the implementation of the Turkish tobacco control legislation and program. It will accomplish this through advocacy, watchdog, and capacity building functions. It will address monitoring, promoting and supporting smoke-free environments, point of sale display restrictions, other tobacco advertisements, promotions and sponsorship bans, pricing, taxation and illict trade, graphic health warnings, and protection from tobacco industry interference in all of these areas.
